In the framework of an operational contract with the European Space Agency (ESA), the aim of this project is to characterise optical communications from Earth to satellites. The contract is for a number of observation campaigns to establish optical links, principally with the ARTEMIS satellite. Demonstrations have also been carried out for the Japanese Space Agency (NASDA) and a link has been established with the SMART-1 satellite. In 2005 and 2006 the observation campaigns continued and,the Argon laser was replaced with a more efficient Nd:Yag laser. The IAC also Maintains the OGS under its contract with the ESA.
