  • The E-ELT first light spectrograph HARMONI: capabilities and modes
HARMONI is the E-ELT's first light visible and near-infrared integral field spectrograph. It will provide four different spatial scales, ranging from coarse spaxels of 60 × 30 mas best suited for seeing limited observations, to 4 mas spaxels that Nyquist sample the diffraction limited point spread function of the E-ELT at near-infrared wavelengths

  • The complexity of the coronal line region in AGNs: Gas-jet interactions and outflows revealed by NIR spectroscopy
Apart from the classical broad line region (BLR) at small core distances, and the extended classical narrow-line region (NLR), a subset of active galactic nuclei (AGN) show, in their spectra, lines from very highly ionised atoms, known as Coronal lines (CLs). The precise nature and origin of these CLs remain uncertain. Advances on this matter

  • The chemical composition of Galactic ring nebulae around massive stars
We present deep spectra of ring nebulae associated with Wolf-Rayet (WR) and O-type stars: NGC 6888, G2.4+1.4, RCW 58, S 308, NGC 7635 and RCW 52. The data have been taken with the 10m Gran Telescopio Canarias and the 6.5m Clay Telescope. We extract spectra of several apertures in some of the objects. We derive C2+ and O2+ abundances from faint

  • The central parsecs of AGN across the electromagnetic spectrum
High angular resolution observations across the electromagnetic spectrum of the nearest AGN are providing a view of the nuclear region rather different from- and somewhat simpler than-the one envisaged by the canonical AGN Unification Schemes. I will review the challenges that parsec-scale observations in the IR when combined with comparable

  • The CALIFA and HIPASS Circular Velocity Function for All Morphological Galaxy Types
The velocity function (VF) is a fundamental observable statistic of the galaxy population that is similar to the luminosity function in importance, but much more difficult to measure. In this work we present the first directly measured circular VF that is representative between 60 \lt {v}{circ} \lt 320 km s‑1 for galaxies of all morphological types

  • The BaLROG project - II. Quantifying the influence of bars on the stellar populations of nearby galaxies
We continue the exploration of the BaLROG (Bars in Low Redshift Optical Galaxies) sample: 16 large mosaics of barred galaxies observed with the integral field unit Spectrographic Areal Unit for Research on Optical Nebulae. We quantify the influence of bars on the composition of the stellar component. We derive line-strength indices of H β, Fe5015
