  • A search for naphthalene in diffuse interstellar clouds
We have obtained high-resolution optical spectroscopy of 10 reddened O-type stars with Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph at Very Large Telescope to search for interstellar bands of the naphthalene cation (C10H8+) in the intervening clouds. No absorption features were detected near the laboratory strongest band of this cation at 6707 Å

  • A precision study of two eclipsing white dwarf plus M dwarf binaries
We use a combination of X-shooter spectroscopy, ULTRACAM high-speed photometry and SOFI near-infrared photometry to measure the masses and radii of both components of the eclipsing post common envelope binaries SDSS J121258.25-012310.1 and GK Vir. For both systems, we measure the gravitational redshift of the white dwarf (WD) and combine it with

  • A journey from the outskirts to the cores of groups. I. Color- and mass-segregation in 20K-zCOSMOS groups
Context. Studying theevolution of galaxies located within groups may have important implications for our understanding of the global evolution of the galaxy population as a whole. The fraction of galaxies bound in groups at z ~ 0 is as high as 60% and therefore any mechanism (among the many suggested) that could quench star formation when a galaxy

  • A Herschel view of the far-infrared properties of submillimetre galaxies
We study a sample of 61submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) selected from ground-based surveys, with known spectroscopic redshifts and observed with the Herschel Space Observatory as part of the PACS Evolutionary Probe (PEP) and the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES) guaranteed time key programmes. Our study makes use of the broad far

  • A flickering study of nova-like systems KR Aur and UU Aqr
We present a study of the flickering activity in two nova-like systems, KR Aur and UU Aqr. We applied a statistical model of flickering simulations in accretion discs based on turbulent angular momentum transport between two adjacent rings with an exponential distribution of the turbulence dimension scale. The model is based on a steady-state disc
