  • Solar-like oscillations in Kepler red giants (Hekker+, 2011)
For this investigation we use Kepler data obtained during the first four months of operation. These data have been analysed by different groups using already published methods and the results are compared. We also performed simulations to investigate the uncertainty on the resulting parameters due to different realizations of the stochastic signal

  • Searching for transits in data with long time baselines and poor sampling
Aims: The standard method of searching parameter space for transits is ill-suited to data sets with long time baselines and poor temporal coverage, such as that anticipated from Gaia. In this paper, we present an alternative method for identifying transit candidates is such data, one focusing on finding periodicity in high S/N outliers. Methods: We

  • Scattering Polarization of Hydrogen Lines in Weakly Magnetized Stellar Atmospheres. I. Formulation and Application to Isothermal Models
Although the spectral lines of hydrogen contain valuable information on the physical properties of a variety of astrophysical plasmas, including the upper solar chromosphere, relatively little is known about their scattering polarization signals, whose modification via the Hanle effect may be exploited for magnetic field diagnostics. Here we report

  • Redshift Determination and CO Line Excitation Modeling for the Multiply Lensed Galaxy HLSW-01
We report on the redshift measurement and CO line excitation of HERMES J105751.1+573027 (HLSW-01), a strongly lensed submillimeter galaxy discovered in Herschel/SPIRE observations as part of the Herschel Multi-tiered Extragalactic Survey (HerMES). HLSW-01 is an ultra-luminous galaxy with an intrinsic far-infrared luminosity of L FIR = 1.4 × 1013 L

  • Rebrightening of MAXI J0556-332
We report a rebrightening of the newly discovered transient MAXI J0556-332 (ATEL #3102, #3103, #3104, #3106, #3110, #3112, #3116, #3119) in optical through soft-X-ray wavelengths. The source is being monitored regularly in the I-band using the SMARTS 1.3m telescope in CTIO, and the I-band light curve has been showing a monotonically increasing
