  • Herschel-ATLAS: Blazars in the science demonstration phase field
To investigate the poorly constrained sub-mm counts and spectral properties of blazars we searched for these in the Herschel-ATLAS (H-ATLAS) science demonstration phase (SDP) survey catalog. We cross-matched 500 μm sources brighter than 50 mJy with the FIRST radio catalogue. We found two blazars, both previously known. Our study is among the first

  • Herschel unveils a puzzling uniformity of distant dusty galaxies
The Herschel Space Observatory enables us to accurately measure the bolometric output of starburst galaxies and active galactic nuclei (AGN) by directly sampling the peak of their far-infrared (IR) emission. Here we examine whether the spectral energy distribution (SED) and dust temperature of galaxies have strongly evolved over the last 80% of the

  • Herschel photometric observations of the nearby low metallicity irregular galaxy NGC 6822
We present the first Herschel PACS and SPIRE images of the low-metallicity galaxy NGC 6822 observed from 70 to 500 μm and clearly resolve the H ii regions with PACS and SPIRE. We find that the ratio 250/500 is dependent on the 24 μm surface brightness in NGC 6822, which would locally link the heating processes of the coldest phases of dust in the

  • Herschel photometric observations of the low metallicity dwarf galaxy NGC 1705
We present Herschel SPIRE and PACS photometeric observations of the low metallicity (Z ~ 0.35 Z&sun;) nearby dwarf galaxy, NGC 1705, in six wavelength bands as part of the Dwarf Galaxy Survey guaranteed time Herschel key program. We confirm the presence of two dominant circumnuclear IR-bright regions surrounding the central super star cluster that

  • Herschel deep far-infrared counts through Abell 2218 cluster-lens
Gravitational lensing by massive galaxy clusters allows study of the population of intrinsically faint infrared galaxies that lie below the sensitivity and confusion limits of current infrared and submillimeter telescopes. We present ultra-deep PACS 100 and 160 μm observations toward the cluster lens Abell 2218 to penetrate the Herschel confusion

  • Herschel ATLAS: The cosmic star formation history of quasar host galaxies
We present a derivation of the star formation rate per comoving volume of quasar host galaxies, derived from stacking analyses of far-infrared to mm-wave photometry of quasars with redshifts 0 z 6 and absolute I-band magnitudes -22 > IAB > -32 We use the science demonstration observations of the first ~16 deg2 from the Herschel Astrophysical
