  • Exploring the diversity and similarity of radially anisotropic Milky Way-like stellar haloes: implications for disrupted dwarf galaxy searches
We investigate the properties of mergers comparable to the Gaia-Sausage-Enceladus (GSE) using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations of Milky Way-like galaxies. The merger progenitors span an order of magnitude in their peak stellar mass ($3\times 10^8\lt M_{\star }/\rm {M}_{\odot }\lt 4\times 10^9$) and include both rotation and pressure

  • Everything that glitters is not gold: V1315 Cas is not a dormant black hole
The quest for quiet or dormant black holes has been ongoing since several decades. Ellipsoidal variables possibly indicate the existence of a very high-mass invisible companion and are thought to be one of the best ways to find such dormant black holes. This, however, is not a panacea as we show here with one example. We indeed report the discovery

  • Disc galaxies are still settling. Discovery of the smallest nuclear discs and their young stellar bars
When galactic discs settle and become massive enough, they are able to form stellar bars. These non-axisymmetric structures induce shocks in the gas, causing it to flow to the centre where nuclear structures, such as nuclear discs and rings, are formed. Previous theoretical and observational studies have hinted at the co-evolution of bars and

  • Detection of ice and gas species on Pluto spectra with James Webb Space Telescope
In this work, we present the analysis and discussion of the first 0.6-5.2 μm spectra of Pluto at four different longitudes obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). These spectra were acquired during year 1 of operations of JWST under the GTO-1 program #1191, led by J. Stansberry. The high-resolution (R~2700), high-sensitivity

  • Design and integration of a SWIR objective lens for the space-borne DRAGO-2 optical system
We present the design of the objective lens for the DRAGO-2 optical system, a compact SWIR camera designed for the space environment. DRAGO-2 is the long-focal variant of the DRAGO (Demonstrator of Remote Analysis of Ground Observations) series, developed for the ALISIO-1 mission of the IACTEC-Space team at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias

  • DES Y3 cosmic shear down to small scales: Constraints on cosmology and baryons
We present the first analysis of cosmic shear measured in DES Y3 that employs the entire range of angular scales in the data. To achieve this, we built upon recent advances in the theoretical modelling of weak lensing provided by a combination of N-body simulations, physical models of baryonic processes, and neural networks. Specifically, we used
