  • Unveiling the Nature of the Low Surface Brightness Stellar Host in Blue Compact Dwarf Galaxies
In order to characterize the low surface brightness component in blue compact dwarf galaxies, we determine their structural parameters for eight objects by fitting a Sérsic law to their B, V, and R light profiles. We restrict the fit to the outer regions, excluding the starburst emission with the help of color and Hα maps. We discuss the problems

  • The thick disc component of the Galaxy from near infrared colour-magnitude diagrams
The vertical distribution of K giants stars is analyzed using 2MASS data and a semiempirical method of extracting stellar densities from the K/J-K colour-magnitude diagrams. The vertical density distribution of red clump giant stars can be described by a double exponential, with scaleheights of 268.81 ± 12.65 pc and 1061.9 ± 52.16 pc. These values

  • The Nature of Ultraluminous X-Ray Sources
We present spectroscopic observations of six optical counterparts of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) around nearby galaxies. The spectra of the six objects show the presence of broad emission features. The identification of these allow us to classify all of the objects as quasars at higher redshift than their assigned parent galaxy. This is one

  • The European Large Area ISO Survey: optical identifications of 15-μm and 1.4-GHz sources in N1 and N2
We present the multiwavelength properties and catalogue of the 15μm and 1.4GHz radio sources detected in the European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) areas N1 and N2. Using the optical data from the Wide Field Survey we use a likelihood ratio method to search for the counterparts of the 1056 and 691 sources detected at 15μm and 1.4GHz, respectively

  • The Center of the Andromeda Galaxy
We report on sensitive high-resolution surveys of the central part of the Andromeda galaxy (M31) with Chandra at X-ray wavelengths and with the Very Large Array at radio wavelengths -- 4.9 and 8.4 GHz. The combination of the data has revealed a number of coincident sources of which two new extended X-ray/radio supernova remnants. Also, the presumed
