  • Optical spectroscopy of flares from the black hole X-ray transient A0620-00 in quiescence
We present a time-resolved spectrophotometric study of the optical variability in the quiescent soft X-ray transient A0620-00. Superimposed on the double-humped continuum light curve are the well-known flare events, which last tens of minutes. Some of the flare events that appear in the continuum light curve are also present in the emission-line

  • On the Saturation of Astrophysical Dynamos: Numerical Experiments with the No-Cosines Flow
In the context of astrophysical dynamos we illustrate that the no-cosines flow, with zero mean helicity, can drive fast dynamo action and we study the dynamo’s mode of operation during both the linear and non-linear saturation regimes. It turns out that in addition to a high growth rate in the linear regime, the dynamo saturates at a level

  • Observability and Geometry in Three Dimensional Quantum Gravity
We consider the coupling between massive and spinning particles and three dimensional gravity. This allows us to construct geometric operators (distances between particles) as Dirac observables. We quantize the system à la loop quantum gravity: we give a description of the kinematical Hilbert space and construct the associated spin-foam model. We

  • New neighbours. III. 21 new companions to nearby dwarfs, discovered with adaptive optics
We present some results of a CFHT adaptive optics search for companions to nearby dwarfs. We identify 21 new components in solar neighbourhood systems, of which 13 were found while surveying a volume-limited sample of M dwarfs within 12 pc. We are obtaining complete observations for this subsample, to derive unbiased multiplicity statistics for the
