  • Transport Effects in the Evolution of the Global Solar Magnetic Field
The axisymmetric component of the large-scale solar magnetic fields has a pronounced poleward branch at higher latitudes. In order to clarify the origin of this branch we construct an axisymmetric model of the passive transport of the mean poloidal magnetic field in the convective zone, including meridional circulation, anisotropic diffusivity

  • The Wide Field Imager at the 2.2-m MPG/ESO telescope: first views with a 67-million-facette eye.
The basic capabilities of the Wide Field Imager (WFI) were described in a previous Messenger article (No. 93, p. 13; see also Table 1) which also includes a brief account of the contributions by the three participating institutes, namely ESO (Garching and La Silla), the Max-Planck- Institut für Astronomie in Heidelberg, and the Osservatorio

  • The starburst galaxy NGC 6089: an ISO view
We present ISOCAM and ISOPHOT observations of the galaxy pair NGC 6090. The SED derived from all ISO measurements is typical for strong starbursts which were triggered by the tidal interaction. With ISOCAM observations we could resolve the two nuclei of NGC 6090 separated by 6'' in the MIR. The NE nucleus is the more active one, both in the optical

  • The ISOPHOT Interactive Analysis (PIA)
The ISOPHOT Interactive Analysis (PIA), originally conceived as a tool for ISOPHOT data processing to be used by calibration experts, rapidly became the software of choice for scientific data reduction of ISOPHOT observations. In this paper we summarize the enhancements of PIA in the last year, and discuss in particular its capabilities for

  • The European large area ISO survey: ELAIS
The European Large Area ISO Survey (ELAIS) has surveyed ~ 12 square degrees of the sky at 15 and 90 μ m and subsets of this area at 6.75 and 175 μ m using the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). This project was the largest single open time programme executed by ISO, taking 375 hours of data. A preliminary catalogue of more than 1000 galaxies has
