  • A compact jet at the infrared heart of the prototypical low-luminosity AGN in NGC 1052
The feeble radiative efficiency characteristic of Low-Luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (LLAGNs) is ascribed to a sub-Eddington accretion rate, typically at log (Lbol/Ledd) ≲ -3. At the finest angular resolutions that are attainable nowadays using mid-infrared (mid-IR) interferometry, the prototypical LLAGN in NGC 1052 remains unresolved down to 5

  • A close look at the dwarf AGN of NGC 4395: optical and near-IR integral field spectroscopy
Intermediate-mass black holes (103-105 M⊙) in the centre of dwarf galaxies are believed to be analogous to growing active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the early Universe. Their characterization can provide insight about the early galaxies. We present optical and near-infrared integral field spectroscopy of the inner ˜50 pc of the dwarf galaxy NGC 4395

  • A census of massive stars in NGC 346. Stellar parameters and rotational velocities
Spectroscopy for 247 stars towards the young cluster NGC 346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud has been combined with that for 116 targets from the VLT-FLAMES Survey of Massive Stars. Spectral classification yields a sample of 47 O-type and 287 B-type spectra, while radial-velocity variations and/or spectral multiplicity have been used to identify 45

  • Understanding the evolution of close white dwarf binaries
In this white paper we stressed the importance of ultraviolet (high- resolution) and optical (low- and high-) spectroscopy to understand of evolution of close binaries that contain white dwarfs which lead to a variety of outcomes.

  • Thermal properties of slowly rotating asteroids: results from a targeted survey
Context. Earlier work suggests that slowly rotating asteroids should have higher thermal inertias than faster rotators because the heat wave penetrates deeper into the subsurface. However, thermal inertias have been determined mainly for fast rotators due to selection effects in the available photometry used to obtain shape models required for
