  • H II Regions Within a Compact High Velocity Cloud. A Nearly Starless Dwarf Galaxy?
Within the SECCO survey we identified a candidate stellar counterpart to the Ultra Compact High Velocity Cloud (UCHVC) HVC274.68+74.70-123 that was suggested by Adams et al. to be a possible mini halo within the Local Group of galaxies. The spectroscopic follow-up of the brightest sources within the candidate reveals the presence of two H ii

  • Globular Cluster Populations: First Results from S4G Early-type Galaxies
Using 3.6 μm images of 97 early-type galaxies, we develop and verify methodology to measure globular cluster populations from the S4G survey images. We find that (1) the ratio, T N, of the number of clusters, N CL, to parent galaxy stellar mass, M *, rises weakly with M * for early-type galaxies with M * > 1010 M ☉ when we calculate galaxy masses

  • Galactic bulges: the importance of early formation scenarios vs. secular evolution
We study the stellar content of three galactic bulges with the high resolution gratings (R=7000) of the WiFeS integral field unit in order to better understand their formation and evolution. In all cases we find that at least 50% of the stellar mass already existed 12 Gyrs ago, more than currently predicted by simulations. A younger component (age

  • Fabry-Perot spectroscopy: a powerful method for detecting superbubbles in galaxy discs
We present a new method for the detection and characterization of large scale expansion in galaxy discs based on Hα Fabry-Perot spectroscopy, taking advantage of the high spatial and velocity resolution of our instrument (GHαFaS). The method analyses multi-peaked emission line profiles to find expansion along the line of sight on a pixel-by-pixel

  • DYNAMICS OF MERGING GALAXIES: KEY STEPS IN THE EVOLUTION OF GALAXIES
We present in this thesis a study of the kinematics of the ionized gas in 12 interacting galaxies using observations made with a Fabry-Perot interferometer, and a study of the kinematics of the molecular gas in one of the systems of our sample using observations taken with a radiointerferometer. We study the interacting galaxy pair Arp 270 which
