  • Evidence of a Distinct Stellar Population in the Counterrotating Core of NGC 1700
We find a distinct stellar population in the counterrotating and kinematically decoupled core of the isolated massive elliptical galaxy NGC 1700. Coinciding with the edge of this core, we find a significant change in the slope of the gradient of various representative absorption line indices. Our age estimate for this core is markedly younger than

  • Evidence for the Impact of Stellar Activity on the Detectability of Solar-like Oscillations Observed by Kepler
We use photometric observations of solar-type stars, made by the NASA Kepler Mission, to conduct a statistical study of the impact of stellar surface activity on the detectability of solar-like oscillations. We find that the number of stars with detected oscillations falls significantly with increasing levels of activity. The results present strong

  • Evidence for a black hole in the X-ray transient XTE J1859+226
We present the results of time-resolved optical photometry and spectroscopy of the X-ray transient XTE J1859+226 (V406 Vul). Photometric observations taken during 2000 and 2008 reveal the presence of the secondary star's ellipsoidal modulation. Further photometry obtained in 2010 shows the system ≃1 mag brighter than its quiescence level and the

  • ETHOS 1: a high-latitude planetary nebula with jets forged by a post-common-envelope binary central star
We report on the discovery of ETHOS 1 (PN G068.1+11.0), the first spectroscopically confirmed planetary nebula (PN) from a survey of the SuperCOSMOS Science Archive for high-latitude PNe. ETHOS 1 stands out as one of the few PNe to have both polar outflows (jets) travelling at 120 ± 10 km s-1 and a close binary central star. The light curve

  • Dynamical Structure of the Molecular Interstellar Medium in an Extremely Bright, Multiply Lensed z ~= 3 Submillimeter Galaxy Discovered with Herschel
    We report the detection of CO(J = 5 → 4), CO(J = 3 → 2), and CO(J = 1 → 0) emission in the strongly lensed, Herschel/SPIRE-selected submillimeter galaxy (SMG) HERMES J105751.1+573027 at z = 2.9574 ± 0.0001, using the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy, and the Green Bank Telescope.
