  • The intriguing H I gas in NGC 5253: an infall of a diffuse, low-metallicity H I cloud?
We present new, deep H I line and 20-cm radio-continuum data of the very puzzling blue compact dwarf galaxy NGC 5253, obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array as part of the 'Local Volume H I Survey' (LVHIS). Our low-resolution H I maps show, for the first time, the disturbed H I morphology that NGC 5253 possesses, including tails

  • The Galactic initial mass function: origin in the combined mass distribution functions of dust grains and gas clouds
We present here a theoretical model to account for the stellar initial mass function (IMF) as a result of the composite behaviour of the gas and dust distribution functions. Each of these has previously been modelled and the models tested against observations (Casuso & Beckman 2002, 2007, 2010). The model presented here implies a relation between

  • The Fast Spiral-in of the Companion Star to the Black Hole XTE J1118+480
We report the detection of an orbital period decay of dot{P}=-1.83+/- 0.66 ms yr-1 in the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1118+480. This corresponds to a period change of -0.85 ± 0.30 μs per orbital cycle, which is ~150 times larger than expected from the emission of gravitational waves. These observations cannot be reproduced by conventional models

  • The ELM Survey. III. A Successful Targeted Survey for Extremely Low Mass White Dwarfs
Extremely low mass (ELM) white dwarfs (WDs) with masses 0.25 M &sun; are rare objects that result from compact binary evolution. Here, we present a targeted spectroscopic survey of ELM WD candidates selected by color. The survey is 71% complete and has uncovered 18 new ELM WDs. Of the seven ELM WDs with follow-up observations, six are short-period

  • The distribution of galaxy morphological types and the morphology-mass relation in different environments at low redshift
We use ˜2000 galaxies from PM2GC (Calvi, Poggianti & Vulcani 2011a) belonging to different environments to show how the fractions of different galaxy morphological types vary with global environment and as function of galaxy stellar mass at low redshift. Considering mass-limited galaxy samples with log10M★/M⊙≥ 10.25, we find a smooth increase
