  • First Bounds on the Very High Energy γ-Ray Emission from Arp 220
Using the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cerenkov Telescope (MAGIC), we have observed the nearest ultraluminous infrared galaxy, Arp 220, for about 15 hr. No significant signal was detected within the dedicated amount of observation time. The first upper limits to the very high energy γ-ray flux of Arp 220 are herein reported and compared with

  • Estimation of Galactic model parameters in high latitudes with 2MASS
Context: In general, studies focused on the Milky Way's structure show a range of values when deriving different Galactic parameters, such as radial scalelengths, vertical scaleheights, or local space densities. Those values are also dependent on the Galactic coordinates under consideration for the corresponding analysis, as a direct consequence of

  • Division II: Sun and Heliosphere
Division II of the IAU provides a forum for astronomers studying a wide range of phenomena related to the structure, radiation and activity of the Sun, and its interaction with the Earth and the rest of the solar system. Division II encompasses three Commissions, 10, 12 and 49, and four working groups. During the last triennia the activities of the

  • Discovery of Radio Emission from the Tight M8 Binary LP 349-25
We present radio observations of eight ultracool dwarfs with a narrow spectral type range (M8-M9.5) using the Very Large Array at 8.5 GHz. Only the tight M8 binary LP 349-25 was detected. LP 349-25 is the tenth ultracool dwarf system detected in radio wavelengths and its trigonometric parallax π=67.6 mas, recently measured by Gatewood and coworkers

  • Determination of field strengths in the quiet Sun
The magnetism in the quiet regions of the solar photosphere carries information on the dynamo processes and its interaction with the convection of the outer layers of the sun. Unfortunately, the scales of the magnetic structures on these regions are mostly unresolved. It is therefore instrumental to tell apart the intrinsic field strengths in those
