  • Infrared Astronomy
What do we understand of the birth and death of stars? What is the nature of the tiny dust grains that permeate our Galaxy and other galaxies? And how likely is the existence of brown dwarfs, extrasolar planets or other sub-stellar mass objects? These are just a few of the questions that can now be addressed in a new era of infrared observations

  • High Temporal Resolution Spectra of Flare Stars
The results of a high temporal resolution spectroscopic monitoring of the UV Cet type fare stars AD Leo and V1054 Oph are reported. Intermediate resolution optical spectra of these stars were taken using the IDS spectrograph of the 2.5 m Isaac Newton Telescope (INT) of El Roque de los Muchachos Observatory (Spain) during 4 nights (2-5 April 2001)

  • HIDEEP survey (Minchin+, 2003)
HIDEEP was carried out in a region of Centaurus centred on RA=13h40m00s, DE=30{deg}00'00" (J2000) with 1024 spectral channels covering 1280 to 12700km/s. As a result of the shape of the Parkes multibeam footprint, the survey has a sensitivity as good as or better than HIPASS over 6x10deg2 with a uniform sensitivity over the central 4x8deg2 area

  • Generalized statistical mechanics of cosmic rays
We consider a generalized statistical mechanics model for the creation process of cosmic rays which takes into account local temperature fluctuations. This model yields Tsallis statistics for the cosmic ray spectrum. It predicts an entropic index q given by q=11/9 at largest energies (equivalent to a spectral index of α=5/2), and an effective

  • Gas flows, star formation and galaxy evolution
In the first part of this article we show how observations of the chemical evolution of the Galaxy: G- and K-dwarf numbers as functions of metallicity, and abundances of the light elements, D, Li, Be and B, in both stars and the interstellar medium (ISM), lead to the conclusion that metal poor HI gas has been accreting to the Galactic disc during
