Perfil profesional
I am an OPI Scientific Researcher (Investigador Científico) at the IAC. My field of research has been the study of the physical properties of small bodies in the Solar System since my final degree project (Rotational properties of asteroids, 1995, UdelaR, Uruguay) until today. I defended my doctoral thesis at the ULL (Tenerife, Spain) in 2002 ("Physical properties of cometary nuclei: sizes and rotation"). I have been a Support
Astronomer at the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (2000-2002) and at the Isaac Newton Group (2002-2007), hired by Ramón y Cajal (2008-2013) and advanced post-doc Severo Ochoa (2013-2014).
My published works range from the study of small near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) to the large Dwarf Planets of the trans-Neptunian belt. I have made several contributions including the discovery of ice and organics on the surface of two asteroids and the discovery that the surface of TNO Makemake is similar to that of Pluto.
Actually most of my work is centered in the discovery and characterization of NEAs. I am the PI of the ATLAS-Teide node of the ATLAS survey network dedicated to the discovery of NEAs and the Chairman of de Science Advisory Group (SAG) of the ESA NEOMIR mission, the planned Planetary Defense mission to install a mid-infrared telescope in L1 to search for small potential impators. I am also member of ESA's Space Situational Awareness Advisory Group since December 2018.
I have been the PI of 12 different projects financed by PNAYA between 2005 and 2025. I am currently the PI of the PID2020-120464GB-I00 (2021-2025). PI of the instrumental project EQC2021-007122-P "ATLAS Telescope at the Teide Observatory" (2022-2023) and the actuation "An ATLAS node at OT" ICT2022-007828. PI of the IAC in the consortium that obtained funding for the ESA ITT proposal no. AO /1-9591 / 18 / D / MR "P3-NEO-I - Observational support from collaborating observatories" between 2019 and 2021. PI of the group of Small Bodies of the Solar System (P/300004) of the IAC from 2005 to mid-2018 (currently the PI is J. de León). PI of an instrumental project in the IAC of instrumentation for the space “JEMEUSO IRCAM (http://www.iac.es/proyectos.php?op1=7&op2=17&id=33)
I supervised 6 doctoral theses and I am supervising another. I have supervised 3 Master's TFM works and a DEA,, and 3 degrees works.
