  • On-sky demonstration of matched filters for wavefront measurements using ELT-scale elongated laser guide stars
    The performance of adaptive optics systems is partially dependent on the algorithms used within the real-time control system to compute wavefront slope measurements. We demonstrate the use of a matched filter algorithm for the processing of elongated laser guide star (LGS) Shack-Hartmann images, using the CANARY adaptive optics instrument on the 4

  • On the possible triple central star system of PN SuWt 2: no ménage à trois at the heart of the Wedding Ring
    SuWt 2 is a planetary nebula consisting of a bright ring-like waist from which protrude faint extended lobes - a morphology believed to be typical of progenitors which have experienced a close-binary evolution. Previous observations of NSV 19992, the star at the projected centre of SuWt 2, have found it to comprise two A-type stars in a 4.9 d

  • New planetary systems from the Calan-Hertfordshire Extrasolar Planet Search
    We report the discovery of eight new giant planets, and updated orbits for four known planets, orbiting dwarf and subgiant stars using the CORALIE, HARPS, and MIKE instruments as part of the Calan-Hertfordshire Extrasolar Planet Search. The planets have masses in the range 1.1-5.4 MJ's, orbital periods from 40 to 2900 d, and eccentricities from 0.0

  • Mechanical stability of the CMS strip tracker measured with a laser alignment system
    The CMS tracker consists of 206 m2 of silicon strip sensors assembled on carbon fibre composite structures and is designed for operation in the temperature range from -25 to +25°C. The mechanical stability of tracker components during physics operation was monitored with a few μm resolution using a dedicated laser alignment system as well as

  • Measurements of differential production cross sections for a Z boson in association with jets in pp collisions at √{s}=8 TeV
    Cross sections for the production of a Z boson in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of √{s}=8 TeV are measured using a data sample collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC corresponding to 19.6 fb-1. Differential cross sections are presented as functions of up to three observables that describe the jet

  • Measurement of the WZ production cross section in pp collisions at √{s} = 7 and 8 {TeV} and search for anomalous triple gauge couplings at √{s} = 8 {TeV}
    The WZ production cross section is measured by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC in proton-proton collision data samples corresponding to integrated luminosities of 4.9 {fb}^{-1} collected at √{s} = 7 {TeV} , and 19.6 {fb}^{-1} at √{s} = 8 {TeV} . The measurements are performed using the fully-leptonic WZ decay modes with electrons and muons in
